Palm or Handheld wireless monitoring on-site

Has anyone tried setting up monitoring operations from a Handheld computer? I am running an LCM-4 with an ethernet card on a local network that would be secure (due to location) if I installed a wireless router/access point. I would like to be able to control and monitor the controller via a wireless connection on a handheld. The wireless part would be no problem but I want direct access to the controller. I would rather not run OptoServer or OptoConnect. I think I could use one of them and an Excel client but I want easier setup like OptoDisplay. Will OptoDisplay run on a handheld?

I guess the answer is what o.s. is your handheld computer using? OptoDisplay and ioDisplay .dll's are designed for Microsoft O.S. but I don't think CE is included. (Anybody disagree?)The available resources and screen resolution would probably be unsuitable anyway. I presume you want only selected viewing of some data and not the whole graphics project. I would suggest you look towards opening a remote session in a Java application and then use simple Cool Forth commands to read and write to controller tables and variables. Opto22 Product Support should be able to supply you with the corresponding manuals and sample code.

My understanding is that the OptoTerminal-G70 will access the Snap line of brains using the memory map or the tag database, I am not sure about the LCM-4. Although this is a panel-mount terminal, I know that there is a G55 rugged handheld terminal that uses the same OS and Opto drivers that are used on the G70. I have used a prototype of the G55 so I know that it will be released soon. Although it will be released without 802.11b, my understanding is that wireless will be available in mid-2004.

I have purchased an HP iPAQ 4155 with Windows CE 2003 on it. I installed a 512m memory card. It comes standard with 802.11b and bluetooth (not necessary for this task). It has a version of Excel on it. I haven't tried yet to use Excel to pull data from the controller but I will. I also may try to use IE/web page. If the G55 is handheld, how does it communicate? Do they expect you to drag a cable around?
