OptoGSM-IO Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminal Versions
Although not completely obvious, its not surprising there is a software compatibility issue with the Nokia30/31 terminals used in the OptoGSM-IO. While this could be considered Nokia’s problem, it may just be yours if you are not aware of the issues. Besides the selection of the basic terminal, there is also the need to consider Terminal Firmware Revision and Terminal Configuration Software. The obvious difference between the Nokia30 and the Nokia31 terminals is the network to which they need to be attached. Nokia30 is for EGSM900/GSM1800 networks, while Nokia31 is for GSM850/1900 networks. You need to know which network your operator is using, based mainly on world geographical area. Tri-band is not supported. There are two versions of “User Control Mode”. Version 1 has most (but not all) of the user mode functionality, while Version 2 is required to use any of the following functionality Disabling Acknowledgements Aliasing Commands Alarming Continuously/Once Authorized Numbers List Inverting Outputs Output Pulses Canceling output pulses Canceling input alarms If your application needs any of these functions (and some are pretty important!) you will need User Control Mode Version 2. In order to use User Control Mode Issue 2 in a Nokia30 terminal, it must be supplied with firmware release 8.63 or higher installed. In order to use User Control Mode Issue 2 in a Nokia31 terminal, it must be supplied with firmware release 3.00 or higher installed. I have not found anyone in Nokia who is prepared to discuss how to update the firmware. Unofficially I was told that the firmware CANNOT be upgraded outside of the factory. I would be extremely interested if anyone can confirm or deny this. The problem can occur if your local distributor supplies from stock (Mine did!) and then refuses to take them back. Besides the firmware issue, there are also different versions of the configuration software In order to use User Control Mode Version 2 in a Nokia30 Terminal or Nokia31Terminal, you need to Terminal Configuration Software 2.3 or higher Terminal Configuration Software lower than 2.3 is terminal specific and only supports User Control Mode Version 1 One last surprising thing is that the configuration software is "dynamic" in that it first reads the firmware revision of the connected terminal before starting up and then uses this information to decide what functionality and options can be displayed and configured. Its a good indication that your configuration software is inferior to the terminal firmware when you cannot even start the application. Finally, a full explanation of this wonderful world of options is available as a download from the Nokia forum: Title: Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminal Version Guide. Downloading it at least ensures you have the latest version of the Version Guide!!
