“Free” SMS/Text Messaging from a SNAP Brain
While future development at Opto22 will enable the ppp port for AT commands, present options for sending a Text/SMS message to a GSM phone are 1. Use GSMART, a useful low cost accessory for the SNAP product line (see related thread under M2M Product Forum) 2. Use a SNAP-SCM232 module and an external GSM Modem 3. Use a M2M SNAP-UPN-ADS with a SNAP-N12MC and Nokia30/31 Terminal Although dependent on the services provided by your GSM service provider, there is another slightly less obvious method. Most phone companies offer fixed contract customers the possibility to receive emails as SMS/Text Messages on their phone terminals. So if your SNAP-Brain is connected to the company Intranet with access to the mail servers, sending a brain generated email message to the mail address provided by the phone company will relay the first 166 characters to the corresponding GSM phone. If your I.T. department considers this as too revolutionary, connecting any modem to the PPP port, and use a dialout connection to your ISP’s local access point, will allow the brain to send the email to the phone company. Warning01. While some I.T. departments may consider the above as too revolutionary, the thought of M2M dialout modems connections, may be considered as anarchy and a threat to network security. To avoid risking your job, check with your I.T. department first! Warning02. Some mobile phone companies do not offer this service, prohibit it, or offer it through as dynamic web portals that periodically change the server nodes IP address. Others offer the service, but their salespeople are not even aware of the services they provide!. Check with your provider first, or maybe its time to switch the provider........
