5VDC Power to AC5 boards?
Hello, I am working on a project that replaces a national instruments IO board with an Opto22 G4ac5 board. Both of these boards have a ribbon cable that simply plugs into my G4PB24 board. The National instruments card, simply plugged in, and ran all of my G4 modules. I’ve switched over the g3ac5 board, and have changed my VB6 software to control the IO. However, when I turn on more than one or two outputs, the LEDs on the modules get very dim. The user manual says something about supplying 5V to this setup, but does not reference where this can be done, or what other manual may be of interest. So do I need to supply 5VDC? If so where? I don’t have a manual for the G4PB24 board. Any suggestions are appreciated. …Mike…

Re: 5VDC Power to AC5 boards?
Surprised noone answered this before but.....looking at the two pdfs of interest G4PB24:

AC5:

It appears that the logic for the G4 output modules is supplied directly from the AC5 card. The AC5 card is drawing 600mA at 5Vdc from your PC power supply. Maybe the reason is that the National card drained less, who knows. Anyway there is no way of injecting additional volts via the AC5 card, but page2 of its specsheet states “An external 5 VDC power supply is required at the I/O mounting rack. This power cannot be provided by the adapter card. Opto 22 recommends the use of an Opto 22 SNAP PS5 or an isolated supply for this purpose.” While not 100% sure, according to the G4PB24 schematic, the last two terminals on the terminal strip marked VDEAPPROVED BARRIER STRIP correspond with the Logic +/- which supplies an external 5V logic power to the G4 Optocouplers. You may like to confirm this with a multimeter or talk to tech support, before complaining that you blew the computer up because of bad advise you got from some geek on the forum. Don’t forget G4 modules can be either 5V, 15V or 24Vdc logic models. The reason you don’t find a reference to 5Vdc is that the board is a generic board that can connect to other devices that are not AC5 interfaces. Give Opto22 tech support a call, the rumor is that they are user friendly, quite human or 100% compatible!
