SYMPTOMS

PAC Control, ioControl, and OptoControl may crash while adding variables, renaming variables, or compiling a strategy. This may also occur when using other software suite components.

The following is an example of the error messages produced:

WORKAROUND

When using any Opto 22 version of PAC Project, ioProject, or FactoryFloor software on a computer with Windows XP Service Pack 2, or Windows XP with no Service Pack, the Desktop theme needs to be set to Windows Classic theme.

To correct the problem, do the following:

1. Right-click on an empty part of the Desktop.

2. Select Properties.

3. With the Themes tab selected, choose the Windows Classic theme, and click the OK button.

4. Restart the computer to apply this workaround.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a Microsoft bug with how Themes are handled in Windows XP, Service Pack 2 and with Windows XP with no Service Pack. A resource leak caused by the bug may eventually cause the Opto 22 application to crash. More information about this bug can be found on the Microsoft Help and Support Web site, KB article 319740, MFC Applications Leak GDI Objects on computers that are running Windows XP .

RESOLUTION

Windows XP Service Pack 3 corrects this issue. Refer to the Microsoft Help and Support Web site, for service pack information. Hotfix 319740 is included in this update.
