How to use a USB-to-Serial adapter with FactoryFloor
Revision:  1.0
Published:  1/14/2009
Applies To
FactoryFloor Software
Versions
Problem was discovered in version:
R4.1a

DESCRIPTION

Most newer computers and laptops, do not come standard with RS-232 serial ports. As a result, a USB-to-RS-232 serial adapter is needed to permit a PC to communicate to a legacy Mistic or serial SNAP controller with FactoryFloor. Attempts to communicate to the controller result in a timeout message.

PROCEDURE

Configure the computer's serial port with specific settings by using Windows Device Manager.

  1. Acquire a USB-to-Serial port adapter.
  2. Download the correct driver for the adapter from the manufacture's web site, based on your computer's operating system.
  3. Install the adapter driver using the manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Plug the adapter into one of the computer's USB ports.
  5. From Control Panel, double-click System, and select Device Manager under the Hardware tab. The Device Manager window appears.
  6. Click on the plus sign to the left of Ports to expand the serial ports list.
  7. Double-click the COM Port for your serial adapter, and select the Port Settings tab.
  8. Configure the port as follows:

  9. Bits per second: 115200 (or the baud rate your controller is configured for)
    Data bits: 8
    Parity: None
    Stop bits: 1
    Flow control: None

  10. Click OK to finish the settings.
  11. Attach an RS-232 serial cable from your controller to the adapter. Refer to the controller user's guide for the pinout to the controller.
  12. Verify the controller is jumpered for ASCII communication. Consult the controller user's guide for information on how to set this jumper. (Note: Controller jumper settings are only read upon powerup.)
  13. Use OptoTerm to configure the RS-232 serial COM port to use ASCII protocol.
    1. Run OptoTerm (Start→All Programs→Opto 22, FactoryFloor R4.1a, OptoUtilities, OptoTerm).
    2. Select the controller from the list and click Modify. The Controller Configuration window appears.
    3. Click Next.
    4. Select the appropriate serial port from the list and click Modify. The Configure COM Port window appears.
    5. Set the protocol to ASCII.
    6. Click Finish, then Finish, and OK.
  1. Communication to the controller from a PC with FactoryFloor should now operate normally.
