How to export and import control engines using the Windows registry
Revision:  2.0
Published:  2/14/2011
Applies To
PAC Project Basic
PAC Project Professional
Versions
Problem affects versions:
R9.3 and lower
Problem is fixed in version:
R9.4000

PURPOSE

Control engines configured in a PAC Control strategy are defined in the computer's Windows registry. Sometimes it's necessary to transfer a strategy to another computer, such as when the computer has to be replaced, or when another PC will be used to run the control application. Instead of typing in each control engine on the new computer, move the control engines by exporting them from the Windows registry to save time and avoid typographical errors.

NOTE: Use this procedure only with PAC Project versions prior to R9.4000. If you have PAC Project R9.4000 or newer, see the PAC Control User's Guide, form 1700. Search on "moving control engines" to find out how to move control engine definitions from one PC to another.

EXPORTING CONTROL ENGINES

Follow these steps to export control engines from the Windows registry.

Note: This procedure is not recommended for 64 bit operating systems.

WARNING: If you use the Windows Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Opto 22 cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using the Windows Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Windows Registry Editor at your own risk.

For additional information about the Windows Registry Editor and best practices when using it, refer to the Microsoft Support web site.

To export control engines from a PC:

  1. Select Start?Run.
  2. Enter regedt32 (a 32-bit application) if you have Windows NT or newer operating system. (You can also use regedit, a 16-bit application, on Windows 95 and newer operating systems.) Click OK.
  3. The Registry Editor appears.

  4. Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Opto22\Control Engines. Your control engines are listed.
  5. Right-click the Control Engines folder and select Export.
  6. The Export Registry File window appears. Enter a file name and be sure the Save as type shows Registration Files (*.reg). Click Save to save the control engine registry information to a file.
  7. Close the Registry Editor.

IMPORTING CONTROL ENGINES

Follow these steps to import control engines from a different computer.

WARNING: If you use the Windows Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. To import control engines from another PC:

  1. Use Windows Explorer to copy the exported registry file (.reg) from another computer to the target computer.
  2. Double-click the registry file name. You'll be asked if it's ok to add the information to the Windows registry. Click Yes.

The information is now added to the target computer's Windows registry.
