Component changes to the Ethernet interface on Ultimate and Ethernet I/O units requires that units with hardware revision 5/24/2010 or newer, use Ultimate I/O firmware version R7.2i or Ethernet I/O firmware version R7.1i, or newer. These changes were necessary due to a component on the I/O units that was previously used and is no longer available.
The Ultimate I/O units affected are:
The Ethernet I/O units affected are:
Firmware versions R7.2i (Ultimate I/O) and R7.1i (Ethernet I/O) and newer are compatible with all versions of these I/O units. If a firmware version older than R7.2i (Ultimate I/O) or R7.1i (Ethernet I/O) is used with a newer hardware unit, various unexpected behaviors can occur. Possible late collisions can occur or be inaccurately detected, as well as the ETD LED showing Ethernet activity instead of Ethernet transmit activity.
How to Identify Newer I/O units:
The easiest way to identify new units is to use PAC Manager to inspect the hardware version (Tools > Inspect > Status Read). The hardware version is listed as I/O Unit Hardware Revision (Month), I/O Unit Hardware Revision (Day), and I/O Unit Hardware Revision (Year).
Also, the units with the newer Ethernet interface components are identified as revision K. Revision K is printed on the Ethernet communication card inside the I/O unit as 6988K.
The updated hardware also has an Ethernet connector with LEDs as shown in this example:
