Updated bootloader available for SNAP-PAC-S1
Revision:  2.0
Published:  9/20/2011
Applies To
SNAP-PAC-S1
Versions
Any loader version prior to:
R3.1c

DESCRIPTION

An updated bootloader (loader) for the SNAP-PAC-S1 is available for controllers with loaders prior to version R3.1c. The update is required and is recommended for your next maintenance opportunity.

To update the bootloader, a special update firmware file has been designed to provide a convenient and simple upgrade. Bootloader update kernel version S8.0g, evaluates the installed SNAP-PAC-S1 bootloader and updates it to version R3.1c, if necessary.

Perform the instructions as described in the following procedure.

PROCEDURE

To upgrade the loader, follow these steps, taking care not to interrupt the installation process by turning off power to the controller. Doing so may render the controller inoperable, requiring the controller be sent to the factory for repair.

  1. Download the special bootloader update file from here.
  2. Because installing the special firmware removes the existing firmware on the controller, make sure a copy of the firmware to be re-installed is available. For example, if the SNAP-PAC-S1 is running firmware version R8.0e, verify you have the snap‑pac‑s1‑r8.0e.bin file. If the firmware file is no longer available from the Opto 22 web site, contact Opto 22 Product Support to obtain the desired version.
  3. From PAC Manager, select Tools→Install Firmware via Ethernet.
  4. From the I/O Unit Maintenance window, highlight the Install Firmware command, navigate to where the special S8.0g firmware file is located, and select it. Add the controller's IP Address.
  5. Do not turn power off to the controller during the next steps.
  6. Click the Execute button. The S8.0g firmware file installation begins.
  7. After the S8.0g firmware file is installed, the SNAP-PAC-S1 will automatically reboot. Two fast green blinks indicate the SNAP‑PAC‑S1 is booting.
  8. The bootloader update process takes several seconds. During this time, the status LED is turned off.
  9. When the bootloader update process is complete, the STAT LED blinks once per second. The LED color indicates the outcome of the update:

  10. Green: The loader was successfully updated to version R3.1c.
Orange: The loader did not need to be updated.
Red: The SNAP-PAC-S1 no longer boots. Contact Opto 22 Product Support.

  11. Use PAC Manager and repeat steps 2 and 3 to re-install firmware . Substitute the name of the desired controller firmware file instead of the special firmware file.
  12. The controller is ready to resume normal operation.
