Spaces in file COM handle connect string make files inaccessible

Symptoms:

Spaces in the connect string for creating a file with a COM handle may make the file inaccessible. Any attempt to access the file via FTP will result in a "critical file transfer error."

For example:
This communication handle is incorrect. It shows a space in the string after the comma:
file:w, test.txt

This communication handle is correct:
file:w,test.txt

Spaces inside a file name are permitted. For example, file:w,test 01.txt

Workaround:

Make sure your connection string has no extraneous spaces.

Resolution:
