RESTful API: Out-of-range float values appear as 0 or "inf" instead of returning an error

Symptoms:

When using the RESTful API to send float values to a variable, the value will appear in PAC Control and in the REST interface as:

0 (zero) if the value sent is too small
For example: {"value":1.2345678E-39}
inf if the value sent is too large
For example: {"value":1.2345678E39}

In both cases, the controller should return a -13 (Overflow error) without changing the value of the target variable.

Workaround:

Validate values before using them with the RESTful API.

Resolution:
