KB53062
ioDisplay and OptoOPCServer clients slow to reconnect when using Windows XP, SP2
Revision:  1.0
Published:  8/29/2006
Applies To
ioDisplay Professional
ioDisplay Basic
OptoOPCServer
Versions

SYMPTOMS

Applications, such as ioDisplay and OptoOPCServer clients, may appear to be sluggish when reconnecting to devices after some type of connectivity failure, such as a network failure, or a power failure. Windows XP, Service Pack 2, slows the ability of an application to reconnect over TCP/IP when 15 concurrent connection requests are pending resolution.

CAUSE

A security enhancement to Windows Service Pack 2 limits the number of outstanding TCP connection requests that can be waiting to be resolved. ioDisplay and OptoOPCServer attempt to automatically reconnect when a communication failure occurs.

The purpose of this enhancement is to limit the spread of malicious, virus spreading code.

CONSIDERATIONS

The following conditions affect reconnection rates:

  1. Windows XP, Service Pack 2
  2. Quantity of I/O units and controllers in a project.
  3. The number of applications that automatically attempt to reconnect when there are communication failures.
  4. When routers intercede TCP/IP communications between a host PC, and I/O units and controllers.
  5. Network connectivity failures.
  6. Congested networks causing frequent packet dropping.
