Revision:  2.0
Published:  6/20/2006
Applies To
FactoryFloor Software - OptoConnect and a SQL Server 2000 SP3 database on a remote computer
Versions
This procedure applies to version:
B4.1b OptoConnect

SUMMARY

OptoConnect may encounter problems when the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database, the Server to Connect to, is not on the same computer as OptoConnect. OptoConnect cannot connect to the ODBC SQL Server DSN Configuration. An error message similar to the following may appear in OptoConnect when selecting a database (OptoConnect Configurator, File→Open SQL Server Master Project Database, and selecting a database from the ones listed in the SQL Data Sources window):

A missing registry entry is the cause of the problem. After clicking OK, another message appears indicating the database could not be opened.

To view the missing registry entry:

  1. Start the registry editor by clicking Start. Select Run, and type regedit.
  2. If you are using a User DSN, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. If you are using a System DSN, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Under these main keys, navigate to \Software\ODBC\ODBC.INI.
  3. Under the ODBC.INI key, click on the key that matches the name chosen for the DSN.
  4. In the right pane, there is an entry called Server with the name of the computer\database pointing to the SQL Server.
  5. In the right pane, there should also be an entry called Database. This entry is either missing or is blank.

The following procedure describes how to correct this problem and have OptoConnect connect to a remote PC running a SQL Server 2000 database.

The following procedure describes how to correct this problem and have OptoConnect connect to a remote PC running a SQL Server 2000 database.

PROCEDURE

Perform the following steps on the computer OptoConnect is installed on.

  1. Under Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, and select Data Sources (ODBC). The ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box appears.
  2. Select the User Data Source to use and click the Configure button. The Microsoft SQL Server DSN Configuration dialog box appears.
  3. Click on the Next button two times. Select the checkbox Change the default database to, even if the current default database does not need to be changed.
  4. Click Next one more time, then click Finish.
  5. Bring up the registry key as described in the above Summary, and refresh the screen by selecting View and Refresh. An entry called Database appears in the right pane.
  6. OptoConnect should now be able to find the database name it is to use when going through the configuration process in Configurator.
