E1 and E2 Architecture and Migration Overview

The E1 and E2 brain boards are Ethernet-ready I/O and communication processors for digital and analog I/O systems. Designed as drop-in replacements for Opto 22's serial-based B1 and B2 brain boards, the E1 and E2 support both serial and Ethernet networking and multiple simultaneous protocols, including Optomux, OptoMMP, and Modbus/TCP.

This overview describes the system capabilities of the E1 and E2 and illustrates methods for migrating existing Optomux systems to use Ethernet networking, while preserving existing I/O racks, modules, and field wiring.

E1 and E2 Brain Board Data Sheet

E1 and E2 brain boards are Ethernet-ready I/O and communication processors for digital and analog I/O systems. Each brain board communicates with a host computer and performs control functions for its I/O points.

Designed as drop-in replacements for Opto 22's serial-based B1 and B2 brain boards, E1 and E2 brain boards support simultaneous serial and Ethernet networking plus multiple simultaneous protocols, including Optomux, OptoMMP, and Modbus/TCP.

PC-Based I/O Overview

This document shows examples of system architecture for PC-based I/O control systems and lists Opto 22 products that work together for PC-based control. System examples include:

  • Ethernet systems using SoftPAC, a software-based programmable automation controller programmed with PAC Control
  • Ethernet systems using the OptoMMP protocol
  • Direct control of I/O using no I/O processor (no brain)
  • High-speed control using the Pamux protocol
NOTE: Before choosing to use a PC for control, consider groov EPIC.  A groov EPIC processor offers many features similar to a PC, such as a Linux OS with optional secure shell access; cybersecurity features; Ethernet, USB, and HDMI ports; and the ability to run the control program and HMI on the same hardware. In addition, a groov EPIC system offers real-time control using traditional programming languages; guaranteed-for-life I/O on the same chassis; industrial toughness for hazardous locations; and easier integration with company computer networks, manufacturing, business, and facility systems, and cloud-based services & software.

E1 and E2 Firmware README

This README file lists revision changes made to the firmware used in E1 and E2 brain boards.

Legacy Edition, PAC Manager User's Guide

This document is the Legacy Edition of the PAC Manager User's Guide. It includes information about both SNAP PAC hardware and older hardware.

Use this guide if you are using any legacy hardware (SNAP Ultimate, SNAP Ethernet, and SNAP Simple I/O, E1 and E2 brain boards) with PAC Manager (software part number PACMANAGER).

If you are using SNAP PAC controllers and SNAP PAC brains only, use Form 1704, PAC Manager User's Guide instead of this guide.

Modbus/TCP Protocol Guide

This document shows you how to set up communication between Ethernet-based Modbus systems (using Modbus/TCP) and the groov EPIC system or SNAP PAC System.

In addition to groov I/O and the SNAP PAC System, the guide also covers Modbus/TCP communication with older Opto 22 Ethernet-based devices, including SNAP Ethernet, SNAP Simple, and SNAP Ultimate I/O; and E1 and E2 brain boards.

Optomux Protocol Guide

The Optomux Protocol Guide provides complete command documentation and examples for programmers using either the Opto 22 Optomux Protocol Driver or the Optomux protocol itself. This guide replaces the previous forms #203 (Optomux Protocol User's Guide) and #92 (Optoware User's Guide).

E1 and E2 User's Guide

E1 and E2 brain boards are drop-in replacements for B1 and B2 Optomux brain boards. E1s and E2s offer both serial and Ethernet networking as well as multiple simultaneous protocols, including Optomux over both serial and Ethernet, Modbus/TCP, and OptoMMP (the memory-mapped protocol also used with SNAP Ethernet systems).

E1 and E2 brain boards can also be used with PAC Project software, such as PAC Control and OptoOPCServer.

OptoMMP Protocol Guide

This guide is for programmers who are writing custom applications to communicate with Opto 22 memory-mapped devices. These devices include groov EPIC processors; groov RIO modules; SNAP PAC controllers and SNAP PAC EB and SB brains; G4EB2 brains; SNAP Ultimate, SNAP Ethernet, and SNAP Simple I/O; E1 and E2 brain boards, and SNAP-LCE controllers.

The guide describes how to use the IEEE 1394-based OptoMMP memory-mapped protocol for programming. The guide also contains the complete memory map for all Opto 22 memory-mapped devices.

NOTE: This guide replaced previous individual programming guides for SNAP Ultimate I/O (form #1312) and SNAP Ethernet I/O (form #1227). This document was formerly called the "SNAP Ethernet-Based I/O Units Protocols and Programming Guide."

ioManager User's Guide

ioManager is the software tool used to assign IP addresses and configure I/O points and system functions on most Opto 22 Ethernet-based hardware, including SNAP-LCE controllers: SNAP Ethernet, SNAP Ultimate, SNAP Simple, E1, and E2 I/O units; and SNAP-IT units. ioManager can also be used to directly read or write to these devices.

Using E1 and E2 Brain Boards for Ethernet-to-Serial Routing

This technical note discusses how to set up E1 and E2 brain boards for the limited purpose of routing data from Ethernet to serial networks.

I/O Configuration for E1 and E2 Brain Boards

Use the steps in this technical note to configure I/O points and features for E1 and E2 brain boards used with Modbus/TCP, OptoMMP (memory-mapped protocol), OPC, or any PAC Project software. (You do not need this technical note if you are using E1s and E2s with Optomux only.)

E1 and E2 Open-Source Software

IMPORTANT: You do NOT need to download this to operate E1 and E2 brain boards. It is a collection of source code intended for software developers only, and requires a solid understanding of the Linux operating system.

E1 and E2 brain boards run a Linux operating system (OS), and some software components used in this OS are licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL), the GNU Lesser Public License (LGPL), and other open-source licenses. This download contains the files Opto 22 is required to provide under these software licenses.

Optomux Protocol drivers and utilities

This file installs drivers for E1, E2, B1, B2, and serial B3000 and B3000-B brains. It is based on the "iolib_optomux.dll" library. This toolkit is recommended for all new Optomux-based applications because it supports Optomux communications over both Ethernet and serial networks.

The toolkit can emulate the interface that the earlier library "OptoMWD.dll" provided; however, using this interface is not required. This legacy interface capability is included to help an existing OptoMWD.dll user make a smoother migration to this newer toolkit. The legacy utilities OptoScan and OmuxUser are also included.

This toolkit is compatible with Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating systems. It is not compatible with .NET programming languages.
