PAC Project Professional Automation Software Suite

Production Specification

The PAC Project Software Suite from Opto 22 provides the software you need for industrial automation, process control, building automation, remote monitoring, data acquisition, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications in any field. PAC Project software works with all groov EPIC processors and SNAP PAC controllers.

Easy to use and suitable for projects from simple equipment management to full industrial control, PAC Project Professional includes the following:

  • PAC Control Professional, a full-featured, flowchart-based tool for developing control programs to run on groov EPIC processors and SNAP PAC controllers
  • PAC Display Professional, creating Microsoft Windows-based human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for operators and technicians to monitor and interact with groov EPIC and SNAP PAC Systems
  • PAC Manager, a utility program for configuring and maintaining SNAP PAC controllers, brains, and I/O (To manage groov EPIC and groov RIO units, use built-in, browser-based groov Manage.)
  • OptoOPCServer, a fast and efficient server for communication with OPC 2.0-compliant clients
  • OptoDataLink, for sharing system data with commonly used databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, and MySQL
  • SoftPAC, a software-based programmable automation controller (PAC) designed for PC-based control
About controller redundancy: PAC Project Professional 9.0 and higher supports controller-level redundancy. Controller redundancy is distinct from network link redundancy, which has been supported for some time.
  • Network link redundancy provides a backup network connection in case the network should fail; it provides a second communication route for the controller.

  • Controller redundancy, in contrast, provides a backup controller that takes over running the strategy in the unlikely event that the first controller fails. In addition to PAC Project Pro, controller redundancy requires two identical S-series PACs and the SNAP PAC Redundancy Option Kit.

Developer and IIoT ready: Because Opto 22 groov EPIC processors and SNAP PAC R-series and S-series controllers include an HTTP/HTTPS server and a RESTful API (application program interface based on the REST architecture), you can securely access I/O point and variable data in your PAC Control program using the language of your choice. Data is returned in JSON format. For complete information, see developer.opto22.com.

NOTE: If you do not need complex network architectures, redundant controllers, support for legacy Opto 22 FactoryFloor systems, OPC communication, or database connectivity, you may find that the free PAC Project Basic Software Suite provides everything you need.

See a comparison chart for PAC Project Basic and PAC Project Professional.

Watch Quick Tips videos.

To find out if you can upgrade to this version for free, see the Opto 22 Software Upgrade Policy

If you are using older controllers or brains (not groov EPIC and not SNAP PAC) with PAC Project, see the SNAP PAC System Migration Technical Note (form 1688) for important information.

Best Practices for PAC Project and groov View Technical Note

Opto 22’s PAC Project automation software suite and groov View HMI software are flexible tools that offer many choices for developing your monitoring, control, and data acquisition projects.

This flexibility provides the power to do everything you need, but the choices you make can sometimes cause problems.

This technical note suggests some best practices you can use when developing your control programs and operator interfaces (HMIs), to help make building and maintaining your projects easier. Included are tips on building, documenting, and backing up your projects.

Communication Tools & Protocols for Opto 22 Products Technical Note

This technical note describes the networking tools and protocols that are compatible with Opto 22 products for communication with a wide variety of software and systems.

Case Study: Bureau of Reclamation

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation constructs dams, power plants, and canals, and delivers water to more than 31 million Americans. The Bureau also operates the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel (LMDT), which drains off and treats water from the local mining district so it can be safely discharged into the Arkansas River.

At the LMDT, the Opto 22 SNAP PAC System is used to monitor water levels, remove metals, adjust the water’s pH, reduce water turbidity, and otherwise treat the water before releasing it—cleaner even than everyday drinking water. More than 2500 I/O points are monitored, controlled, and alarmed.

Case Study: Sotavento Power Plant (Chinese)

This document is in Chinese.

The Sotavento Virtual Power Plant in Galicia, Spain, is a "green" power utility with an annual production of approximately 38,500 MWh. The plant uses alternative fuels, specifically wind power, supplemented by hydrogen. At the Sotavento plant, Opto 22's SNAP PAC System provides a solution for not only automation and control, but also data acquisition, enterprise connectivity, and communication to databases.

Systems integrator Optomation Systems designed an integrated supervisory system for the Sotavento site, based on the Opto 22 SNAP PAC System platform. Utilizing a mix of analog and digital I/O connections, standalone and rack-mounted SNAP PACs connect to electrolyzers, motor generator units, and other plant systems and communicate with this equipment as well as with the plant's legacy SCADA systems. Disparate machinery and instrumentation from vendors such as Hydrogenics, Emerson, and Bauer Compressors are linked to the Opto controllers, which communicate using a variety of industrial protocols, such as Profibus and Modbus. The controllers also aggregate all data and serve it to Sotavento databases for analysis and archiving.

Case Study: Hong Kong Power Plant (Chinese)

This document is written in Chinese.

The Lamma Power Station in Hong Kong is using Opto 22 SNAP PAC standalone controllers to control heat, pressurization and other critical processes. The Opto 22 PACs connect to weigh scales, conveyors, pressure transducers, and thermocouples to ensure that the coal burning operations taking place at Lamma are executed safely and optimally.

For example, analog I/O modules wired to scales measure the weight of the coal prior to its delivery to the furnaces and sends these figures to the controller. Based on these readings—and whether they're low or high—the controller then instructs the conveyors delivering the coal to the furnaces to speed up or slow down appropriately, so the furnaces generate the proper amount of heat needed to spin turbines that produce the power.

At the same time, integrated circuit temperature derivative probes (ICTDs) connected to thermocouple analog input modules monitor the actual furnace temperatures, which are then used in PID calculations to regulate the temperature via analog output modules.

PAC Project Software - MSI for Command Line Installation

Use this .msi (Microsoft® Installer) installation file to install PAC Project software from the command line in Microsoft Windows®.

A command line installation of PAC Project in silent mode requires no user input once installation has begun. This is useful if you are an OEM machine builder who makes many copies of the same machine, or if you are an integrator or someone at a large company who wants to use an installation script. An .msi installation file is designed for a network-wide installation, and it works with Microsoft network features such as Active Directory.

SoftPAC Software-based Programmable Automation Controller

SoftPAC™ is a software-based programmable automation controller (PAC) designed for PC-based control.

Programmed just like an Opto 22 hardware PAC, SoftPAC runs your PAC Control strategy independently on an embedded or standalone PC.

One SoftPAC is included in the PAC Project Professional Software Suite, or you can purchase SoftPAC separately and use the free PAC Project Basic Software Suite to program it.

SoftPAC has the following advantages when compared to a hardware PAC:

  • You can run your PAC Control control program (strategy) in a Microsoft Windows environment rather than on a standalone or rack-mounted PAC.
  • If you are a machine builder or an OEM with a PC already in your product, or if you want to use a PC for a new design, your cost for a controller is reduced.
  • SoftPAC takes advantage of a PC’s ability to quickly read and write to files as well as its greater space for data storage. This makes it especially useful for applications requiring extended file storage, frequent access to files, math-intensive processes, or a large number of control flowcharts running at the same time.

For a detailed comparison with hardware PACs, see the SoftPAC Data Sheet (form 2020).

This product includes software and documentation in Adobe Acrobat PDF format as a download. The download file includes other PAC Project software in addition to SoftPAC.
