In Bulgaria, 19,008 cell package positions of radioactive waste from its nuclear power plants must be tracked and monitored for the next 350 years. To achieve this, Bulgaria's new National Repository for Medium and Low Radioactive Waste was built: 66 permanent storage cells and 122 temporary storage cells within 15 buildings. This massive facility also included a liquid radioactive waste management system, substations, HVAC subsystems, fire and water supply systems, and all the other infrastructure systems to support it.
With an effort this large for a first-of-its-kind facility, many subcontractors chose their own hardware and control methodologies because the original specification was not robust enough to provide functional automation information.
