Updating SNAP PAC Controllers to Use microSDHC Cards

Applies To:

SNAP-PAC-S1
SNAP-PAC-S1-FM
SNAP-PAC-S1-W
SNAP-PAC-S2
SNAP-PAC-S2-W
SNAP-PAC-R1
SNAP-PAC-R1-FM
SNAP-PAC-R1-W
SNAP-PAC-R2
SNAP-PAC-R2-FM
SNAP-PAC-R2-W

Versions Affected:

Expanded support beginning in version: Firmware R9.4a
Expanded support beginning in version: Loader R6.1a

Symptoms:

SNAP PAC R-series and S-series controllers with a manufacturing date code of 11/08 (November 2008) and newer have a microSD card slot on top of the controller’s case. Originally this card slot accommodated microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 2 GB.

R-series and S-series controllers with a manufacturing date code of 07/14 (July 2014) and newer have been enhanced to accommodate higher-capacity microSDHC cards up to 32 GB, formatted with the FAT32 file system. In addition, you can use long filenames for files on the card.

Some older controllers with microSD card slots can be updated for the new enhancements.

To check your controller's manufacture date, look at the white label on the controller's side:
SNAP PAC manufacture date

Workaround:

Updating SNAP PAC R-Series Controllers

  1. Check your controller's manufacture date (see image above).
  2. If the date is 07/14 or newer, the controller already includes the enhancements.
  3. If the date is 11/08 through 06/14, download Loader version R6.1a or higher and Firmware version R9.4a or higher for your controller.
  4. Follow steps in the Updating the Loader on a SNAP Device Technical Note (form 1789) to install the new loader.
  5. Follow steps in the PAC Manager User's Guide (form 1704) to update the firmware.
For information on using microSD/SDHC cards, see form 1595, the SNAP PAC R-Series Controller User's Guide (Chapter 4, Maintenance).

Updating SNAP PAC S-Series Controllers

  1. Check your controller's manufacture date (see image above).
  2. If the date is 07/14 or newer, the controller includes the enhancements.
  3. If the date is 11/08 through 06/14, download Loader version R6.1a or higher and Firmware version R9.4a or higher for your controller.
  4. If the date is before 06/14, the controller does not have the hardware enhancement to accept microSDHC cards.
For information on using microSD/SDHC cards, see form 1592, the SNAP PAC S-Series Controller User's Guide (Chapter 3, Maintenance).
