After prolonged, continuous powerup, controller may lose communication via host port

Applies To:

Versions Affected:

Versions affected: Firmware R9.4c and higher. Also affects Beta firmware B9.4c, dated April 2016 and newer.
Problem is fixed in version: PAC firmware R9.5d

Resolved In Version:

Problem is fixed in version: PAC firmware R9.5d

Symptoms:

After being powered up continuously for at least 24 days, controllers (excluding software-based SoftPAC) may fail to respond to communication via the controller's host port. Programs that communicate via the host port include (but are not limited to):

  • PAC Control Debugger
  • PAC Display
  • PAC Terminal
  • OptoOPCServer
  • OptoDataLink
  • SNAP PAC REST API
  • .NET Controller Software Development Kit for SNAP PAC
The issue can occur after approximately 25 days of continuous power, and then at approximately 50 day intervals thereafter.

The issue can occur even when the controller isn't running a strategy. Once the issue occurs, if a strategy is running, it will continue to run, but the controller will not be able to communicate via the host port. Existing host port connections may close, and programs will not be able to connect to the controller's host port.

Workaround:

Restart the controller by issuing a "Restart Device from powerup" command in PAC Manager (Tools > Inspect > Status Write > Operation OptoMMP Device > Restart Device from powerup).

Resolution:

Opto 22 has resolved this issue.
