SNAP-IO4ABLC

Availability: Obsolete
OBSOLETE - SNAP I/O for Allen-Bradley Learning Center

Production Specification

OBSOLETE - Due to the unavailability of essential parts, the SNAP-IO4ABLC has reached its end-of-life and is no longer available for purchase.

The SNAP IO4AB Learning Center is a complete package for learning how to configure and use Opto 22’s intelligent remote SNAP I/O™ with an Allen-Bradley® Logix-based PLC system, such as CompactLogix® or ControlLogix®.

The Learning Center is made up of real hardware and software—the same field-proven products used every day by Opto 22 customers—plus a load panel and a user's guide. The guide walks you through configuring I/O and setting up implicit messaging, using EtherNet/IP to communicate between the SNAP I/O and an A-B controller.

When you've finished the step-by-step tutorial, you can use the intelligent I/O processor (which we call a brain) and the analog and digital I/O modules for further testing or to build a pilot project. As with all Opto 22 products, product support is free.

Minimum Requirements

To use the SNAP IO4AB Learning Center with your PC, you must have the following minimum computer configuration:

  • A computer with at least the minimum processor required for your version of Microsoft Windows (1 GHz Pentium®-class or better recommended) and Ethernet capability
  • VGA or higher resolution monitor (Super VGA recommended). Minimum size: 800x600 with small fonts.
  • Mouse or other pointing device
  • Installed Windows printer (optional)
  • Microsoft Windows Vista® Business (32-bit), Windows XP (with Service Pack 2 or higher), or Windows 2000® (with Service Pack 4) workstation operating system. Microsoft Windows server and 64-bit versions of Windows workstation operating systems are not supported.
  • At least 1 GB RAM for Windows Vista, or at least 512 MB for Windows XP or Windows 2000
  • At least 89 MB of available hard drive space

Additional Requirements

In order to do the lessons provided with the IO4AB Learning Center, you will also need:

  • RSLogix 5000 software, version V13 or later installed on your computer
  • Allen-Bradley controller that supports EtherNet/IP with an Ethernet adapter module connected to the network
  • IGMP enabled, managed industrial Ethernet switch

SNAP IO4AB Learning Center Data Sheet

NOTE: Due to the unavailability of essential parts, the SNAP-IO4ABLC is obsolete as of April 2022. This document will remain available on our website for customers who already own this Learning Center.

The SNAP IO4AB Learning Center (part number SNAP-IO4ABLC) is a fully functioning package of Opto 22 hardware and software designed to help you learn how to configure and use messaging via EtherNet/IP between an Allen-Bradley Controller and Opto 22's intelligent remote SNAP I/O.

IO4AB User's Guide

This guide provides instructions on how to set up EtherNet/IP messaging between an Allen-Bradley® Logix™ controller and Opto 22’s SNAP PAC I/O using Opto 22’s EtherNet/IP Configurator as well as Allen-Bradley’s RSLogix™ 5000 software.

The SNAP IO4AB Learning Center User's Guide is a hands-on, learn-by-example training course developed for use with the SNAP IO4AB Learning Center (part number SNAP-IO4ABLC).

You'll learn how to configure and use implicit messaging via EtherNet/IP between an Allen-Bradley Logix controller and Opto 22’s intelligent remote SNAP I/O™. This includes setting up communications between Opto 22 intelligent remote I/O and RSLogix™ 5000, using remote I/O intelligence for counting and pulsing for a direct output, setting a communication watchdog, using an Opto 22 analog I/O modules to read scaled analog inputs and write a clamp value to an analog output, and configuring and running a distributed PID loop in the Opto 22 intelligent remote I/O.

This guide provides detailed descriptions of the EtherNet/IP commands that can be accessed when using remote Opto 22 I/O with an Allen-Bradley controller.

Using Intelligent SNAP I/O with Allen-Bradley PLC Systems

This technical note introduces SNAP I/O (brain, mounting rack, and I/O modules) for Allen-Bradley industrial PLC systems that use EtherNet/IP, including ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and MicroLogix.

The technical note briefly presents communication concepts, such as implicit and explicit messaging, and describes how to use implicit messaging to communicate with an A-B RSLogix-based PLC system.

White Paper: Adding Process Control to a PLC-Based System

This white paper discusses the strengths of traditional programmable logic controller (PLC) systems and distributed control systems (DCSs). The paper weighs methods of adding process control to a PLC-based system and proposes distributed I/O processing as the best method. It also introduces intelligent remote SNAP I/O, which adds process control analog functions.

Expanding Allen-Bradley Systems with Intelligent Remote I/O (Chinese)

This document is written in Chinese.

This white paper explores a new way to expand Allen-Bradley PLC systems, adding functionality as well as additional I/O, with less strain on the central PLC and little programming.
