SNAP-SCM-232

Production Specification

The SNAP-SCM-232 provides two RS-232 serial communication ports for two channels of high-speed, isolated serial data. Used with a brain or R-series controller, the module connects serial devices such as printers, scales, chart recorders, and barcode systems to an Ethernet network for control, monitoring, or data acquisition.

Part of the SNAP PAC System, the module mounts on a SNAP PAC rack with a SNAP PAC brain or rack-mounted controller. Analog, digital, and serial I/O modules can all be on the same rack. Such an I/O unit is also well suited for PC-based control or for use as intelligent remote I/O for an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix PLC system, or other RSLogix-based system, such as ControlLogix or CompactLogix.

NOTE: The SNAP-SCM-232 can also be used with a legacy SNAP Ultimate, SNAP Ethernet, or SNAP Simple brain.

For similar serial communication using RS-485/422, see SNAP-SCM-485-422.

Build your system in the SNAP I/O Configurator.

* Module performance is limited by the number of serial modules on the SNAP rack. Each rack backplane provides approximately 2.5 Mbps of bandwidth.

** Maximum number of modules per rack assumes a 4A power supply (i.e. SNAP-PS5).

SNAP PAC System Product Guide

This document lists and describes all Opto 22 SNAP PAC System part numbers, including PAC Project software, SNAP PAC controllers, SNAP PAC brains, and SNAP I/O modules of all kinds. SNAP PAC mounting racks and SNAP power supplies are also listed.

SNAP Serial Communication Modules Data Sheet

SNAP serial communication modules are designed for use with the SNAP PAC System and can also be used in I/O units without a controller. Each module provides one or two channels of serial data—RS-232 or RS-485/422—at a remote Ethernet location, on the same mounting rack with digital and analog I/O.

This document describes the SNAP-SCM-232 and SNAP-SCM-485-422 serial communication modules.

SNAP SCM Module Firmware README

This README file lists revision changes made to the SNAP-SCM-232 (REVISION A)and SNAP-SCM-485-422 (REVISION A) modules.

SNAP Serial Communication Modules User's Guide

The SNAP-SCM-232, SNAP-SCM-485-422, SNAP-SCM-PROFI, SNAP-SCM-W2, SNAP-SCM-CAN2B, and SNAP-SCM-ST2 serial communication modules are designed for use with the SNAP PAC System and can also be used in standalone I/O units.

Each of these modules conveniently provides serial data at a remote Ethernet location.

  • The SNAP-SCM-232 and SNAP-SCM-485-422 typically interface with printers, scales, chart recorders, and barcode systems.
  • The SNAP-SCM-PROFI provides a standard electrical interface with PROFIBUS DP® networks.
  • The SNAP-SCM-CAN2B provides an interface to a Controller Area Network (CAN), so your SNAP PAC system can receive data from CANbus devices.
  • The SNAP-SCM-ST2 provides pulse and direction signals for stepper motor drives.
  • The SNAP-SCM-W2 complies with the Wiegand interface format and is used for access control applications.

Case Study: University of California, Irvine

At the University of California, Irvine, Scientist Dr. John Garman and a team of his engineering students use an Opto 22 SNAP PAC System in their research of coal and biomass combustion. The SNAP PAC hardware controls the coal feed rate into an entrained flow reactor, monitors thermocouples that feed back process control data, monitors emissions, and acquires and logs data on operating conditions within the reactor.
